How do I apply for or renew my Swedish passport or national ID card?
In the U.S., you can only apply for or renew a passport or national ID card at the Embassy of Sweden in Washington DC or at the Consulate General in New York. The mobile passport station is no longer in use. Swedish citizens may also apply for or renew a passport or national ID card while visiting Sweden. Where can I pick up my Swedish passport or national ID card?
You can pick up your Swedish passport or national ID card at the Honorary Consulate of Sweden in Dallas. Please just let the passport officer know at the time of application. The Consulate will contact you via phone or email once the passport has arrived.
Everyone 18 and older must pick up the passport or national ID card in person. Please bring your old Swedish passport or national ID card with you, even if expired, a valid ID, such as a US Driver’s License, and money for the service fee.
How can I apply for an Emergency Passport?
If you lost your passport and you need to travel very urgently, you may apply for an emergency passport at the Honorary Consulate of Sweden in Dallas. The emergency passport has limited validity and is valid for a single trip to Sweden or to your country of residence only. How do I apply for a Coordination Number for my child?
To be able to apply for a passport for a child born abroad, your child must first have been assigned a coordination number. You may apply for a coordination number for your child with the Honorary Consulate of Sweden in Dallas. The child must be present when the application is filed, and he/she must be accompanied by at least one legal guardian/parent. There is no fee for this application. How do I apply to Retain my Swedish Citizenship?
If you have become a Swedish citizen by application, you cannot lose your Swedish citizenship if you move abroad. If you are a Swedish citizen who were born abroad and are residing outside of Sweden, there are some circumstances under which you may lose your Swedish citizenship. You will lose your Swedish citizenship when you reach the age of 22, if you
- were born outside of Sweden
- have never lived in Sweden, and
- have not visited Sweden or have circumstances which indicate an attachment to the country
You will not lose your Swedish citizenship if this would cause you to become stateless.
To avoid losing your Swedish citizenship, you can apply to retain it. You must do this after you have turned 18 but before you reach the age of 22. You do not need to make such an application if, at any time, you have lived in Sweden or if you have regularly visited Sweden. The Honorary Consulate of Sweden in Dallas can help you submit this application to the Swedish Migration Authorities. Can I regain my Swedish citizenship?

How do I renew my Swedish Driver’s License?
As of May 1, 2017, it is no longer possible to renew your Swedish Driver’s License if you are permanently residing abroad. Please visit the Embassy website for more information.
Can I get married in the U.S.?
Different states have different requirements regarding marriage. Please contact the Marriage License Bureau or equivalent for detailed information pertaining to Texas. You cannot get married at the Embassy in Washington DC or at any of the Swedish Consulates in the U.S.
Can you help with a certification of Swedish documents?
Yes, the Honorary Consulate of Sweden in Dallas can help you with certifications of Swedish documents, such as Certificates of Existence (levnadsintyg), Marriage Certificates, Extracts of the Population Register or similar. Please contact us to set up an appointment.
How can I get an Extract of the Population Register?
You may request an Extract of the Population Register in either Swedish or English by contacting the Swedish Tax Authorities (Skatteverket).
Can I vote in the Swedish election?
Swedish citizens residing abroad can vote in advance in Swedish elections either by mail or in person at Embassies and Consulates. Swedes residing abroad remain in the Electoral Register (röstlängden) for ten years after their emigration is recorded in the Tax Agency’s Population Register (folkbokföringen).

A Schengen visa is required for persons of certain nationalities who wish to visit the Schengen countries. A Schengen visa can be issued for a maximum of 90 days. U.S citizens do not need a visa to visit Sweden if the visit is 90 days or less. Please visit the Embassy website for more information.
